Story Design/Build, a Brooklyn-based design/build firm, specializes in creating extraordinary custom environments. Artist run and operated, we offer a full line of services ranging from custom furniture and finishing work to full-scale renovation. Coming out of a community of master tradesmen, fine artists and craftspeople, Story Design/Build can liaison as project coordinator to deliver a broad range of truly exceptional results. Our past projects exemplify diversity in the utilization of unusual materials: cast bronze; sculptural lighting objects; traditional Venetian plaster; multi-layer custom finishes, hand-antiqued mirror glass; and vintage fittings. We strive to achieve distinctive design solutions executed with time-honored methods using extraordinary materials.

 

Our practice is typically a dialogue with the client wherein they can “live with” mock-ups or samples to be sure the work integrates with their real lives. At Story there is no taboo on working with the clients in place and occupying their home. We pride ourselves on the personal relationships we have with clients, which often continue past project deadlines and, because we design and fabricate for their actual lives, there is no expiration date on our process. Clients’ lives change and develop, even after clean-up, so we remain involved and responsive. It's a privilege to work with our clients and be invited into their lives. We take that privilege very seriously.

 

 

The Principals

 

Rob Fischer is an artist, designer and builder who has exhibited in museums internationally and whose work  is included in major museum and private collections. He is currently working on a series of glass and steel architectural sculptures that will be exhibited in Park Avenue in Manhattan in the fall. 

 

Kevin Johnson has worked as a fine and applied artist both nationally and internationally for the last 30 years. His experiences range from large-scale design/build projects to commissioned sculptural gardens.

 

Jo Ann Wasserman has designed a range of residential interiors, museum exhibitions, as well as, artists’ books. She is also a writer and the author of several collections of poetry.
